Major Hurricane Forecast In Gulf of Mexico

Tropics Watch update for 9/23

No description found

We have a new disturbance and the forecasts are concerning. Meteorologist Jonathan Kegges back with you for another edition of the Tropics Watch newsletter!

We have highlighted this area for weeks and now there is a disturbance to track, unfortunately. Potential Tropical Cyclone 9....potential because it’s not mereologically a tropical cyclone (depression, storm, hurricane in the Atlantic basin), but is expected to be one and impact land soon. Emphasis on the soon. Once this thing gets going through the Yucatan channel, it is expected to race until landfall.

The steering currents are clear, but there is still some uncertainty on how they set up. More on what’s steering the disturbance here.

The biggest concern, if it does develop its inner core relatively soon is that it is forecast to move over the entire loop current, an area of extremely deep and warm water.

The storm is expected to track over the loop current (red area that loops north of the Yucatan) and could rapidly intensify.

Hurricanes like Katrina and Michael found the loop current and rapidly intensified.

If it fends of a little shear and some dry air to its north, it could get strong very fast Tuesday into Thursday. Landfall is expected in Florida, however the exact point is uncertain.

This is forecast to be a very large storm as well so surge will be problem for the entire Gulf coast of Florida. Tropical storm conditions can extend well inland. Impacts will to all of Florida are expected to become more clear by Tuesday.

We’ll break down the tropics LIVE on News 6+ and our YouTube channel Monday night at 8 p.m. ET.

See you then!

Jonathan

There is a lot of noise out there when it comes to the weather. A lot of hype, a lot of clickbait etc. You have my word that you will never see any of those scare tactics from me and News 6. Seeing this myself makes my blood boil.

We’re going to talk about a lot of stuff (hopefully while everything remains out at sea), but we will do so with sound science and meteorology.

It is my hope to have a conversation about the weather this season and to my pass along everything I know so that you know what to look out for.

You can expect an e-mail from me every Monday (and as needed) during hurricane season. If it’s quiet, we’re going to talk about it. If there’s something going on out there, we’re definitely going to be talking about it. We also have a live tropics show that airs on our YouTube channel every Monday at 8p.m. and News 6+
