The Senate education bill introduced by State Sen. Dennis Baxley, of Ocala, continues to make it’s way through Senate committees.

The proposal (SB 86), sponsored by Sen. Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala, advanced from the Republican-controlled Senate Education Committee in a 5-4 party-line vote. An amendment adopted by the committee changed the proposal from completely cutting Bright Futures aid for certain majors to reducing the scholarship amounts awarded to students. “We are still concerned about the repeal of the promise to pay either 100 or 75 percent of student and fees for Bright Futures students. Any cuts for Bright Futures will make it harder for students to reach their goals” said Alexandra Valdes, student-body president at Florida International University. The proposal also would create the Florida Bright Opportunities Grant Program, aimed at helping pay tuition and fees for students eligible for need-based Pell grants.

The Class of 2020 has until midnight Tuesday to make sure they qualify for Florida’s Bright Futures scholarship. Ron DeSantis issued an executive order in September to extend the deadline to qualify for the state’s scholarship to give high school seniors three extra months to take the SAT or ACT. Families must submit a Student Florida Financial Aid Application to help determine a student’s qualification. Florida high school graduates have a second chance to boost their standardized test scores to earn the Bright Futures scholarship. Ron DeSantis issued an executive order to extend the deadline to qualify for the Bright Futures scholarship to Dec. 1, 2020. The order will allow the class of 2020 seniors three months to take the SAT or ACT. It relieved a lot of pressure knowing that I wont have as much debt when I graduate college, Kimpton said. The order will also allow students who qualify for the Bright Futures scholarship to apply fees for distance learning toward the scholarship.

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. Many high school seniors in Florida have faced challenges trying to secure a Bright Futures scholarship amid the coronavirus pandemic. When the coronavirus pandemic closed schools in the middle of March some testing sites also closed. The scholarship developed in 1997 for Florida students to attend Florida universities now has some parents and students frustrated. For the Bright Futures scholarship, for 75% you need to have 75 volunteer hours, a 3.0 GPA and 1170 on the SAT, and I had all of those but I had 1160 on the SAT, Wilson said. Michele Lipkas daughter, Gabriella hoped with one more shot she could earn the SAT score needed to qualify for the Bright Futures scholarship.

ORLANDO, Fla. High school seniors who had their last semester disrupted due to the coronavirus pandemic will now have more time to qualify for a Bright Futures scholarship to help them pay for their college tuition. The head of the state Department of Education signed an emergency order Wednesday providing some extra provisions for seniors who had to delay SAT and ACT testing or cancel planned volunteer hours. They will now have until July 31 to get their scores up to par to meet the minimum requirements needed to be awarded the state-funded scholarship. In addition, school counselors can submit paperwork showing the volunteer hours a student intended to complete and that document will count as proof that the student met the service requirement.
