I can’t have anybody leave the plantation,” McDermott told the players, using a term evocative of slavery and the antebellum South. Rasmussen announced McDermott had been indefinitely suspended the next night, with McDermott tweeting that he merited the suspension.

McDermott publicly apologized Tuesday and again Wednesday for urging his players to “stay on the plantation” after the 14th-ranked Bluejays' 77-69 loss at Xavier. Assistant coach Alan Huss will serve as interim head coach for the home game against Butler on Saturday. “I made a mistake and I own it,” McDermott said in a Twitter post after the suspension was announced.
