Orlando City Commissioner Bakari Burns and a group of volunteers walked down Nimons Street Saturday morning. He was encouraging people to fill out the 2020 Census with only days left before the September 30th deadline. Orange County government set up seven computer kiosks inside seven different community centers in the county. Orange County government said while people are focused on their jobs, health, and families, they need to be reminded of the importance of responding to the 2020 U.S. census. Bureau officials acknowledge that they've had door-knockers, also known as enumerators, come to training but then not show up for work. Concerns about attracting door-knockers forced the Census Bureau to raise its hourly wage: Enumerators in the highest-paying cities can now earn $30 an hour. A census taker in Orlando who also was a door-knocker for the 2010 census says the training this time has been quite different. Census Bureau director Steven Dillingham said in prepared remarks to a House committee last week that the bureau has 3 million applicants available, and that more than 900,000 job offers have been accepted.

Stephens says 62 percent of the United States population has filled out the 2020 census, but she's concerned with the numbers for the Orlando region. "In Orlando, we're seeing response rates of about 40 percent," Stephens said. Make a list of your ten friends, relatives and associates, and call them up to ask if theyve completed the census, Stephens said. We need to get the message out that the census is important, its easy and its safe.

Though the country is dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, bureau officials say this is the time for families to fill them out. According to 2020census.gov, Orange County only 34% percent of households have filled out the Census form and Seminole County 40% and Osceola County only 29% as of March 30th. Stephens said they do expect the response rate to soar despite the virus because so many families are at home social distancing. April 1st is observed as “Census Day” nationwide.
