AdThe Lake County School Board Chairman said taxpayers recently voted to have more security in schools and they’ve also used the funding for more services. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said they’re always working to better bridge the gap with kids and that law enforcement is needed in schools.

The video appears to show the student slapping at the deputy’s face and kneeing him, which is also described within the incident report. The video ends when both the deputy and the student get back to their feet and the deputy draws his Taser. According to the report, Brown gave the student verbal commands to stop, threatening to use the stun gun if she did not listen. According to the report, the student later apologized to Brown claiming she “blacked out” in a fit of anger.

The sheriff’s office said the school resource deputy responded to a classroom after a teacher found a 9mm Kel-Tec Luger pistol in a student’s backpack. LCSO said the 16-year-old student did not know the gun was in the backpack and said he had “fished” it out of Lake Eustis using a rope and a magnet. Deputies said the student was transported to the Lake County Jail. He is facing charges of possession of a gun on campus and two counts of possession of a controlled substance after deputies said they found a Ritalin pill and Zolpidem pill in a bottle in his backpack.

Just days before the first day of school, Lake County students will have an opportunity to get tested for COVID-19. It's not mandatory for students but the tests are being offered for free. "The whole idea is to be able to start the school year in a way we hope will minimize the risk of the spread of COVID-19 in our schools," Sherri Owens, spokesperson for Lake County Schools said. Student testing will be available Tuesday through Friday from 7 a.m. to noon at East Ridge High School, Eustis High School, Umatilla High School and South Lake High School. The first day of school in Lake County is Aug 24.
