Florida bill would OK public prayer in school sports
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. โ Florida schools competing for a high school athletic championship could be given an opportunity to address the crowd, including with a prayer, before the competition begins, under a bill approved by a House committee Wednesday. The bill would require the Florida High School Athletic Association to give each team an opportunity to address the crowd over a public announcement system for no more than two minutes each. It would apply to public and private schools, and Republican Rep. Webster Barnaby said that could include prayer. No one objected to the prayer that was said in the House of Representatives. Democratic Rep. Susan Valdes, a former Hillsborough County School Board member, said even at graduations, students sometimes veer away from their approved speeches.

Orange County deputies released unnerving video today that they believe could show a man abducting a teenage girl. Another one: I hate to just pack it on but I told you were in the middle of a news dump and I know every set of eyes counts when it comes to finding missing people. Every day this week thus far, except for Wednesday when there was a data dump, Florida has reported daily cases totals under 7,000.
FHSAA says fall sports will start on Aug. 24 at the earliest
At a meeting on Thursday night the FHSAA board said Aug. 24 is the targeted start date. On Tuesday, Orange County schools said district officials have not determined a date to start fall sports. Seminole County Schools said practice would start on Aug. 31. Brevard County Schools announced they will not start practices for fall sports at the moment.

ORLANDO, Fla. The Florida High School Athletic Association will keep the current fall sports schedule for now. An emergency meeting was held on Monday night to see how fall sports could move forward. Another meeting will be held later this week. News 6 Sports Anchor Ryan Welch said there was talk of possibility extending the end of the fall season. More than 4,000 people tuned into the emergency meeting online on Monday.
Orange County postpones practices for fall sports
ORLANDO, Fla. Despite a Monday night ruling from the Florida High School Athletic Association to allow fall sports to begin, Orange County schools will not permit practices to begin Monday due to concerns over the coronavirus. Although Orange County Public Schools has not released an officials statement about the move, several schools, including Boone, Edgewater and Wekiva high schools, posted Tuesday morning about the decision on social media. OCPS has made the difficult decision to postpone fall sports tryouts, practices, and competitions until further notice; however, conditioning may continue with safety protocols, and we will continue to review and approve Athletic Clearances, Wekiva Athletics tweeted. The FHSAA voted after a five-hour meeting to allow practices to resume July 27. Orange County starts school August 21, pushed back from its original start date of August 10.
