A former Georgia district attorney charged with interfering in the police investigation of the 2020 killing of Ahmaud Arbery has made her first court appearance more than three years after being indicted.

The family of Ahmaud Arbery is waiting for stalled court proceedings to resume in the case of a former Georgia prosecutor accused of interfering with the police investigation into the Black man's killing.

Ahmaud Arbery is being honored by his hometown after stiff sentences for hate crimes against the white men who chased and killed him.

Georgia prosecutors say the 2020 killing of Ahmaud Arbery was followed by 16 phone calls between the local district attorney and a former employee later convicted of murder in the shooting.

“Unfortunately, many questions and concerns have arisen" about the actions of the district attorneys, Carr said Tuesday in a statement. Gregory McMichael told police he and his grown son armed themselves and pursued the young man because they they thought he matched the description of a burglary suspect. Johnson said Glynn County police contacted two of her assistant prosecutors on the day of the shooting, seeking legal advice. Johnson said she could not recall if she had told Carr's office that she enlisted Barnhill's help before recusing herself. On Monday, Carr replaced him with Cobb County District Attorney Joyette M. Holmes, one of only seven black district attorneys in Georgia.
