But in the U.S., same-store sales were down 5% for the quarter despite the holiday drinks that usually draw customers. Starbucks said it's confident U.S. same-store sales will rise between 5% and 10% in its fiscal second quarter as the pandemic's impact continues to fade.

Global same-store sales fell 9% from the prior year, a better showing than the 12% to 17% drop Starbucks anticipated in July. Johnson said Starbucks opened 260 stores in the July-September period in China, where it now has just over 4,700 stores. Starbucks net earnings for the fourth quarter fell 51% to $363 million, or 33 cents per share. Starbucks estimated it lost $5.1 billion in sales due to the pandemic.
