During the summer there are several events held outdoors across the nation including, but not limited to, Independence Day, resulting in large numbers of people outside in the elements.

The National Weather Service started Lightning Safety Awareness Week in 2001 to call attention to the dangers of lightning in an effort to lower the deaths and injuries caused by lightning strikes.
