ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – While many students may be excited for the upcoming winter break, Orange County Superintendent Dr. Barbara Jenkins says she’s worried risky behavior during the holidays could have a negative impact on classrooms next semester. She said during the county’s COVID-19 update on Thursday there have been more than 2,000 coronavirus cases among students, faculty, and staff since in-person classes resumed in August. “We are deeply concerned that those numbers are growing,” Jenkins said. Citing an increase in COVID-19 cases believed to be tied to the Thanksgiving holiday, Jenkins said she hopes families will use caution when making plans for the two-week break. Along with the upcoming holiday, another concern of Pino’s is the increase in the median age of COVID-19 patients.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Walt Disney Parks and Resorts notified the Florida unemployment department Tuesday of impeding layoffs across the theme park’s properties that includes nearly 10% of its employees across the state. The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, the branch that oversees the state’s unemployment system, was notified late Tuesday of thousands of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts layoffs. As a result, 6,390 employees of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts U.S., Inc. will be laid off beginning December 4, 2020. Disney Parks, Experiences and Products chairman Josh D’Amaro said in a statement the layoffs are due to the prolonged financial impact of COVID-19. That leaves more than 15,100 unannounced layoffs to come across Disney parks and resorts in Florida and California.

The CDC’s evictions Order expires on Dec. 31, 2020, unless extended,” the memorandum reads. The CDC’s order posted online here, says it applies everywhere in the U.S. except where a local eviction moratorium is already in place. Now that Florida’s order has expired, the federal CDC moratorium will apply in the Sunshine State instead. The governor also issued an executive order Wednesday letting local government bodies know they need to resume in-person meetings by Nov. 1.

The first Crew Dragon to launch humans was named Endeavour by its passengers, NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley.

NEW YORK – A federal judge on Sunday postponed a Trump administration order that would have banned the popular video sharing app TikTok from U.S. smartphone app stores around midnight. The ruling followed an emergency hearing Sunday morning in which lawyers for TikTok argued that the administration's app-store ban would infringe on First Amendment rights and do irreparable harm to the business. In arguments to Judge Nichols, TikTok lawyer John Hall said that TikTok is more than an app, since it functions as a “modern day version of a town square." In addition, Hall argued that a ban would prevent existing users from automatically receiving security updates, eroding national security. Trump set the process in motion with executive orders in August that declared TikTok and another Chinese app, WeChat, threats to national security.

There will be no Johannessen Lights display for this upcoming Christmas season. The family announced on Facebook that it won’t have its traditional display of lights for Central Florida due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In a Facebook post, the family stated: “It is with a heavy heart that we publish we will not be doing the lights for 2020. Ron DeSantis announced last Friday that Florida, effective immediately, is moving to the third and final phase of its reopening plan. WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump said Saturday he’s given his “blessing” to a proposed deal that would see the popular video-sharing app TikTok partner with Oracle and Walmart and form a U.S. company. Trump said if completed the deal would create a new company likely to be based in Texas. “We are pleased that the proposal by TikTok, Oracle, and Walmart will resolve the security concerns of the U.S. administration and settle questions around TikTok’s future in the U.S.,” TikTok said in a statement. On Saturday, Trump said the U.S.-based TikTok “will have nothing to do with China.” TikTok says it has 100 million U.S. users. Earlier Saturday, WeChat users asked a U.S. judge to block the government's actions, saying they would restrict free speech.

ORLANDO, Fla. – With months of high temperatures in the 90s, it’s hard not to look forward a few days when Central Florida returns to the 80s. Orlando will reach a high of 91 degrees, with a 50% chance of rain across the region. Rain lingers over the weekend at 60%, with highs in the low 90s. And Central Florida will see highs in the mid-80s most of next week. Orlando has a yearly rain surplus of 0.15 inches.

Remains were found in March 2018 buried under a concrete slab and fire pit on Laurie Shaver’s property on Sandy Pines Road. Several months later, authorities positively identified the remains as Michael Shaver, her husband. Lake County deputies spoke to Laurie Shaver in early 2018 and she said she hadn’t seen him since 2015. Those friends and co-workers found this odd and did not think Michael Shaver would leave his children, according to the arrest affidavit. Laurie told her boyfriend Michael Shaver “wasn’t missing, he was no longer walking this earth," according to the arrest affidavit.

We will have highs in the 80s for the weekend as autumn nears. High temperatures in the Orlando area will be in the low 90s for the next couple of days, but a new front nearing Central Florida will drop the highs into the upper 80s this weekend. The tropical depression’s maximum sustained winds early Thursday have decreased to near 30 mph (45 kph) with additional weakening expected. Authorities have warned that rain from the storm could swell eight waterways in Florida and Alabama to record levels. Meanwhile, Teddy has become a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph, the National Hurricane Center said.

DAVIE, Fla. – An argument over a parking space in a Walmart lot turned violent quickly on Tuesday afternoon, according to Davie Police. It all happened at the Walmart on University Drive and Griffin Road over a parking-space disagreement, News 6 partner WPLG reported. Police said one woman had been waiting for a parking spot but when the space opened up, a silver Mercedes sped into the spot before she could pull in. At that time, when she got out of her car, she was attacked by three people from the Mercedes-Benz, according to police. Video shows the woman on the ground being attacked by the group while other shoppers try to help stop the assault.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Florida’s U.S. senators, known for introducing legislation on time changes, are pushing to keep the country on Daylight Saving Time because of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the two senators, the change will help give families stability during the pandemic. “Our government has asked a lot of the American people over the past seven months, and keeping the nation on Daylight Saving Time is just one small step we can take to help ease the burden,” Rubio said. “More daylight in the after school hours is critical to helping families and children endure this challenging school year. However, Congress has yet to pass legislation allowing Florida to have year-round Daylight Saving Time.

As the system slowly moves away from the Orlando area, however, rain chances here will decrease a bit. Hurricane Sally’s northern eyewall is raking the Gulf Coast with hurricane-force winds and rain from Pensacola Beach, Florida westward to Dauphin Island, Alabama, the National Hurricane Center said. Stacy Stewart, a senior specialist with the National Hurricane Center says the Category 2 hurricane could strengthen further before the entire eyewall moves inland. Sally was a rare storm that could make history, said Ed Rappaport, deputy director of the National Hurricane Center. With Hurricane Sally expected to dump rain for days, the problem could be worse than normal, she said.

A curfew was called in the coastal Alabama city of Gulf Shores due to life-threatening conditions. The county includes Pensacola, one of the largest cities on the Gulf Coast. Landfall was expected on the northern Gulf Coast early Wednesday. Although the hurricane had the Alabama and Florida coasts in its sights Wednesday, its effects were felt all along the northern Gulf Coast. With Hurricane Sally expected to dump rain for days, the problem could be worse than normal, she said.

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. – A Florida man who was driving with a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit didn’t realize he crashed into a “drive sober or get pulled over” sign that was set up near the road, according to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies said Bounty Cheramy was driving on Tamiami Trail in Port Charlotte around 12:30 a.m. Aug. 30 when he struck the sign board trailer with his blue Mazda. When questioned, Cheramy said he was talking on the phone with a friend when he hit something but he didn’t know what he hit or how, records show. Cheramy admitted that he had some kind of alcoholic drink that his friend made him as the two were studying, according to the affidavit. After a failed field sobriety test, a breath test was conducted that showed Cheramy’s blood alcohol level was at .166 and .161, records show.

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – A man accused of impersonating a law enforcement officer was arrested after officials said the man pulled over an off duty cop. Forde told authorities he drove up behind the BMW, which appeared to be swerving, and activated his emergency lights and siren, officials said. In the body camera video, Forde told police he thought the other driver was impaired. When Forde pulled alongside the BMW, the officer said Forde was dressed in a way that resembled a law enforcement uniform. In the body camera video, Forde told police he was not trying to impersonate an officer.

ORLANDO, Fla. – After months of being closed to stop the spread of COVID-19, bars across Florida will be allowed to serve alcohol for on-site consumption once again come Monday. The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation Secretary Halsey Beshears made the announcement Thursday evening on Twitter, hours after he appeared alongside Gov. Did you ever think youd see an alligator in the snow? Well, thanks to a gator farm in Colorado we now get to enjoy snow gators. Colorado Gator Farm shared a video on their Facebook page of several alligators laying in the recently fallen snow on Wednesday. Even on an overcast day.Located in Southern Colorado, the gator farm is situated on a geothermal well that keeps the pond water nice and toasty at 87 degrees. The gator refuge posted a similar video in January 2018.

The National Hurricane Center is giving this area a 20% chance of development over the next five days. The tropical moisture is leading to a wet start in Central Florida, especially along the coasts of Flagler, Volusia and Brevard counties. Rain chances will increase to 70% Thursday afternoon as temperatures warm into the low 90s across Central Florida. Orlando saw a record 4.05 inches of rain, dropping the citys rain deficit to 0.45 inches for the year. The previous record for rain on Sept. 9 in Orlando was 2.73 inches, set in 1964.

SANFORD, Fla. A massive fire erupted early Thursday in Sanford when a gas line ruptured, prompting officials to evacuate 800 nearby homes. Crews discovered the ruptured 12-inch gas line in a remote area near the Black Bear Wilderness Area. On Sunday around 3:30 p.m., Davis took a 911 call from a mother in Palm Coast who was frantic because her 6-month-old baby was not breathing. Davis walked the mother through CPR and counted with her as she gave the infant compressions. According to the call logs, the baby was breathing again about four minutes after the mother called 911. No one there knew CPR so over speakerphone Davis explained how to perform CPR to the family, according to FCSO. Davis now has four leaves on the FCSO Communication Centers Tree of Life which honors lives saved by dispatchers.

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. The Flagler Countys Sheriffs Office wants your help to name its newest deputy. The agency says a new K-9 is joining its crime-fighting unit after K-9 Valor retired. The K-9 unit is taking submissions for its 18-month-old teammate, a Belgian Malinois that will be partnered with Deputy Robin Towns. Before joining the Sheriffs Office K-9 unit, Towns served as a school resource deputy. Deputy Towns will be a great addition to the K-9 Unit and were excited to see him and his new partner become a great team, Sheriff Rick Staly said in a news release.

With two tropical storms (Paulette and Rene) and two tropical waves, everyone wants to know if Florida could be impacted by any of these systems. The hurricane center is giving the area a 40% chance of development over the next five days. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Paulette will not impact the United States and will eventually curve away due to a big area of high pressure near Bermuda. Here is the 5 a.m. advisory and forecast track for #Paulette from the National Hurricane Center. The hurricane center says it has a 60% chance to develop tropical characteristics over the next five days.

Heat and strong winds also hit California and parts of the Pacific Northwest over the holiday weekend, triggering destructive wildfires. Snow fell in Colorado, Montana and Wyoming, where portions of Interstate 80 closed and forecasters predicted up to a foot (30 centimeters) in the mountains and temperatures in the teens (-7 Celsius) overnight. Several northern Utah school districts canceled classes, and officials warned people to stay inside if possible to avoid flying debris, downed power lines and other dangers. Several semitrailer trucks blew over on northern Utah highways. Freeze and frost warnings also were posted for parts of Montana, Idaho, Colorado, Nebraska, North Dakota and Minnesota.

DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. A woman who was pulled from her burning vehicle during the aftermath of a crash fled from the scene before first responders could speak with her, according to the Daytona Beach Shores Public Safety Department. Video released from the department shows a Jeep with its front end smashed and a second vehicle nearby engulfed in flames. Officer Castellano immediately ran over to the burning vehicle to verify that no one else was trapped inside. The man who had been driving the Jeep, Jacob McRae, told police that the other vehicle pulled in front of him. After the crash, the other vehicle burst into flames as the driver was trapped inside.

ORLANDO, Fla. – The tropics remain hot this Labor Day weekend with two tropical waves spinning near Africa and one south of Puerto Rico. Tropical moisture will surge into Florida from the Caribbean, but will only help to enhance rain and storm chances through the middle of the week. The third wave has a much higher likelihood of development with an 90 percent chance over the next five days. The large area of showers and thunderstorms will gradually develop, likely becoming a tropical depression over the weekend or early next week. This wave currently has a 80 percent chance for development over the next five days and is expected to become a tropical depression by the middle of next week.

That's the situation now in Northern California, where high and dry winds are expected until Wednesday. The fire danger also is high in Southern California, where new fires were burning in Los Angeles, San Bernardino and San Diego counties. Evacuation orders were expanded to more mountain communities Monday as the largest blaze, the Creek Fire, churned through the Sierra National Forest in Central California. The fire moved 15 miles (24 kilometers) in a single day during the weekend and burned 56 square miles (145.04 square kilometers). California has seen 900 wildfires since Aug. 15, many of them started by an intense series of thousands of lightning strikes in mid-August.

The unidentified couple chose the location to reveal their baby's gender. Last year, a homemade explosive used to reveal a baby's gender killed 56-year-old Pamela Kreimeyer in Knoxville, Iowa. Milloy said some devices used to reveal genders are harmless but others contain chemicals that produce heat and can spark fires. He said the device used Saturday will be tested to determine what it contained.

Josef Koeberl managed to stay 2 hours, 30 minutes and 57 seconds inside a custom-made glass box filled up to his shoulders with ice cubes. More than 200 kilograms (440 pounds) of ice cubes were needed to fill up the box, after Koeberl stepped inside wearing nothing but swim trunks. After being taken out of the ice box by helpers he said that the sun felt really great on his back.

Rain chances remain fairly low on Thursday at 30% before gradually increasing Friday through Labor Day. By Sunday, rain chances increase to 60%. Hurricane Nana has maximum sustained winds of 75 mph as it moves onshore in Belize. Another tropical wave located off the coast of west Africa is merging with the previously mentioned disturbance.

JENSEN BEACH, Fla. A nurse shark lived up to its name this weekend when it latched onto a mans arm at a Florida beach and refused to let go. A five-minute video posted on Facebook Monday shows the man was surprisingly calm during the encounter and kept the small shark almost cradled in the crook of his arm. Nurse shark grabbed on to this guy after he grabbed the shark. The witness who recorded the video said the man fell into the sharks trap after he tried to grab it. He said the sharks mouth felt like sandpaper and didnt hurt.

MOUNT CARMEL, Fla. No damage was reported after a weak earthquake occurred Thursday morning along the Alabama-Florida line. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a magnitude 4.0 quake happened just after 10 a.m. north of Mount Carmel, Florida, mostly a forested area southwest of Brewton, Alabama. The Escambia County Sheriffs Office said it had not received any calls about damage, but some area residents reported feeling the quake in response to a question posed by the area National Weather Service office on its Facebook page. The earthquake occurred more than 6 miles beneath the surface, according to the Geological Survey.

In an age of growing divisive political discourse across the country, a Nebraska man is drawing attention for his impassioned plea to take action against boneless chicken wings. Video of Ander Christensens satirical rant before the Lincoln City Council on Monday pleading to ban the boneless chicken wing moniker has garnered widespread attention on social media and news sites. Christensen, who is the son of a council member, made his case that the meat in boneless wings doesn't come from a chicken's wing at all, but from its breast. A circuit judge in Orange County issued a ruling Thursday that declared Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings executive order requiring residents to wear face coverings to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is constitutional and legal. Circuit Court Judge Lisa Munyon has rejected a challenge to the constitutionality of the mayors executive order requiring residents to wear a face mask in public. Residents constitutional rights are not violated by being asked to wear a face covering, according to Munyon. In other words, theres no constitutional right to expose others to a contagious and potentially lethal virus, during a declared pandemic by not wearing a face mask, Demings said. Nearly 36,700 people in Orange County have tested positive for the virus since March, according to the Department of Health.

ORLANDO, Fla. – The city of Orlando, the Orlando Magic and the Orange County Supervisor of Elections have teamed up to transform the Amway Center into an early voting site. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings, Orange County Supervisor of Elections Bill Cowles and Orlando Magic CEO Alex Martins made the announcement Wednesday afternoon from the Amway Center. The site will be open to Orange County residents from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 19 through Nov. 1. Anyone who comes to the site will find coronavirus safety measures in place, a drive-thru ballot drop off location on Church Street and maybe even Orlando Magic players like Mo Bamba greeting voters at the entrance. The Orlando Magic and head coach Steve Clifford met with Orange County Sheriff John Mina to discuss policing in the community, according to the team.

DELTONA, Fla. A 22-year-old woman is in custody Tuesday after deputies say she attacked a customer while working at a Wendys in Deltona. According to an incident report, the victim had pulled up to the drive-thru to order three double cheeseburgers. The employee at the drive-thru asked the customer to pull up to a parking spot as they prepared his order. When the victim asked why he needed to move, he told deputies the employee gave him a smart (expletive) answer. The man told authorities the attack had gone on for several minutes with Martin walking away at one point and returning to deliver more blows.
