Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings joined other officials at the opening of the time capsule, which was buried at the site of the Orange County Courthouse as construction was completed 25 years ago. The items included photographs and letters from local residents, students and civic leaders documenting a “Day in the Life” in Orange County. The first item pulled out by Demings, who was an Orlando police captain in 1995, was a page of photos provided by Lockhart Middle School. Pamela Schwartz, of the Orange County Regional History Center, provided details about the items contained in the capsule, which also included a letter from Chiles, a commemorative Orange County Sheriff’s Office badge and various newspapers.

With its own office inside the Orange County Courthouse, the advocates help survivors through the injunction process. Harbor House walks survivors through a safety plan, helps apply for victim relocation funding, referrals to legal aid and assistance in filing injunctions. Nearly 1,000 injunctions were filed in the past fiscal year through Harbor House, that’s up 27%. “We know that when the economy goes down, domestic violence goes up so we’re already seeing an increase in domestic violence, but it will increase more over the next several months so that’s why we need your help now,” Sperzel said.

County officials said the wiring prevents the birds from perching on the courthouse ledges. “We’ve had mold issues, drywall issues, flooring issues, the list goes on,” Davis said. Because of that, county officials approved to replace the deteriorated system installed in early 2000.

Harbor House is Orange County's only state-certified domestic violence organization. Almost 11,000 women, men and children were sheltered at the organization's domestic violence housing facilities last year. Every minute, 20 people are physically abused by a partner, according to Harbor House. Victims of domestic violence can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline, available 24 hours a day, at 1-800-799-7233, or in Central Florida, the Harbor House 24-hour confidential crisis hotline at 407-886-2856.
