Cocoa Beach mayor wants to limit BYOB alcohol on the beach downtown

33-year-old motorcyclist dies in crash on A1A in Cocoa Beach, trooper say
A 33-year-old motorcycle rider died Sunday night in a crash on State Road A1A in Cocoa Beach, the Florida Highway Patrol reported. The wreck happened around 10:15 p.m. on SR A1A near South 20th Street. According the FHP crash report, the biker left the road for an unknown reason and hit a wall, ricocheting into a ditch. The rider later died at a local hospital, troopers said. The crash remains under investigation.
Shark attacks surfer off Melbourne Beach
MELBOURNE BEACH, Fla. โ A man was attacked by a โtoothy sea creatureโ while surfing Tuesday morning off Melbourne Beach, according to officials. The attack happened around 8:15 a.m. near the 7400 block of State Road A1A in the Sunnyland Beach community. The 25-year-old victim was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center with an arm injury, according to Brevard County Fire Rescue. Officials said the man suffered โsignificant bleeding.โโIt was severe enough that they thought he needed specialized attention at a trauma center,โ Fire Chief Mark Schollmeyer said. Firefighters said the surfer was fortunate to be right across the street from the last fire station in the county before Sebastian Inlet.
Experimental plane crashes on Melbourne Beach, injuring 1
MELBOURNE BEACH, Fla. โ An experimental aircraft crashed Friday morning on Melbourne Beach, officials said. The Sheriffโs Office said the pilot took off from the airport in Valkaria and the engine died before he tried landing on the beach. Emergency responders reported the plane had about 20 gallons of fuel but none of it leaked onto the beach after crashing. Melbourne Beach resident Rick OโConnor took pictures of the upside down plane. โItโs pretty amazing, sent it up to my grandchildren, show them what I found on the beach today,โ OโConnor said.
Pedestrian dead after being struck by vehicle in Volusia County, officials say
VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. A pedestrian is dead after being struck by a vehicle Friday night in Volusia County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Officials said a vehicle was heading north on State Road A1A and a pedestrian was walking west on the east shoulder of the roadway. The pedestrian attempted to cross State Road A1A. Officials said the front of the vehicle struck the pedestrian, officials said. The crash remains under investigation, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Possible sinkhole shuts down southbound A1A in Flagler County
FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. A possible sinkhole is causing traffic to be rerouted in an area of Flagler County, according to the sheriffs office. Deputies said the hole opened up Tuesday on State Road A1A. Southbound A1A was shut down at South 13th Street and traffic was being diverted onto South Central Avenue, sheriffs office officials said in a tweet. Satellite Beach organizer supports A1A crosswalks legislation following girlโs death
SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. โ As far back as December 2018, people in Satellite Beach said they feared something tragic could happen at several new crosswalks on State Road A1A. After Nelson was killed by the Dec. 22, 2019 crash, Willemin was an organizer of a rally in opposition to how the crosswalks look now. Willemin also raised his voice to the Brevard County Commission and Satellite Beach City Council. Two months later, the question remains if the unidentified driver who Nelson's parents said hit her will face penalties.
