PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – A man died when his parachute didn’t open after he jumped from a hotel balcony in Florida’s Panhandle, police said. The man who appeared to be in his 20s jumped from the 14th floor of the Sunrise Beach Resort in Panama City Beach on Sunday night, police said. Panama City Beach police were investigating the BASE jumping incident and have released few other details. BASE jumping stands for jumping not from planes, but from fixed locations including buildings, antenna, spans or Earth. It has produced stunning online videos of people parachuting from buildings and wingsuit fliers zooming shockingly close to the treetops — mostly recorded outside the United States.

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Early voting locations in several counties in Florida’s Panhandle will be closing as Hurricane Zeta approaches the region. While Hurricane Zeta is expected to make landfall south of New Orleans on Wednesday afternoon, Florida's western Panhandle region is expected to see deteriorating weather conditions throughout day, officials said. The voting locations should return to the normal 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. routine on Friday and Saturday, which is the last day for early voting in Florida. Similar hours have been posted for early voting locations in Santa Rosa County. In neighboring Okaloosa County, Supervisor of Elections Paul Lux said all early voting locations will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday “out of an abundance of caution," as the storm approaches.

Hurricane Sally officially made landfall at 5:45 a.m. EDT on Sept. 16 as a Category 2 storm in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Sally made landfall on the 16 year anniversary of Hurricane Ivan, a Category 3 hurricane that also came ashore in Gulf Shores. Ivan officially made landfall at 3 a.m. Hurricane Ivan track from 2004Ivan at one time was an extremely powerful Category 5 storm as it moved through the Caribbean. Ivan famously made a loop-the-loop after emerging back into the Atlantic, impacting South Florida as a much weaker system.

Hurricane Sally is expected to make landfall along the Gulf Coast sometime through the night and morning. – Hurricane Sally, a plodding but powerful storm with winds of 100 mph, crept toward the northern Gulf Coast early Tuesday, with forecasters warning of potentially deadly storm surges, flash floods spurred by up to 2 feet (.61 meters) of rain and the possibility of tornadoes. Claunch marveled at how the Gulf waters had already crept over swaths of sandy shore and infiltrated bike paths and parking lots. Sally achieved hurricane strength Monday and quickly intensified to a Category 2 storm with 100 mph (161 kph) winds. Forecasters expect winds to increase to up to 110 mph (177 kph) over the warm Gulf waters before the storm blows ashore.

PANAMA CITY, Fla. – A newborn baby died after being left inside a hot car in Florida’s Panhandle, sheriff’s officials said. The Bay County Sheriff’s Office offered few details about the case on Thursday. Rescue crews were called to a home in Panama City late Wednesday after the baby was found inside the car. Sheriff’s officials said the baby had possibly been left inside the vehicle for several hours. The Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation, and will be speaking to witnesses to establish a timeline of events.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Florida isn’t doing too shabby with social distancing, at least, according to this scoreboard. Uncast developed a “social distancing scoreboard,” which evaluates how every state is following and implementing social distancing in the battle against COVID-19. The Sunshine State was graded a B for its efforts to keep people away from each other during the coronavirus outbreak. The scores were developed using “human mobility data,” looking at traveled distance for each state, assuming people who are staying home aren’t traveling, and therefore are practicing social distancing. Seminole County jumping in on restrictions with its county-wide social distancing order.
