APOPKA, Fla. – Two females were killed early Monday in a fiery crash in Apopka, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The double fatal wreck was reported around 4 a.m. on Rock Springs Road near Vista Crest Drive.
The FHP said a Hyundai Accent was traveling north on Rock Springs Road when the driver lost control and the car struck a concrete pole and caught fire. The driver, Kelcey Gilbert, 20, and her passenger, Aven Veronee, 20, died, troopers said.
A neighbor said she heard the crash outside her home Monday morning.
"It was really loud. It sounded like it was coming into my house," neighbor Pamela Keister said. "Seeing someone stuck in a car like that, it was very sad."
Keister said she and her family rushed over to help when they heard the crash.
"We all got up to check it out and it just burst into flames," Keister said.
Keister said after seeing the fiery crash, there wasn't much they could do.
"She was pinned to the steering wheel, so he couldn’t get her out. We tried using our water hose to put it out, but it didn’t reach," Keister said.
Keister said it's a reminder to always count your blessings.
"Made me think about my family and how thankful we are and that any day something can happen and you can be gone," Keister said.
Troopers said they're waiting for autopsy results to see if the victims died of injuries suffered from the crash or the fire.
Troopers said there is surveillance video that showed the crash. The video has not yet been released.
Rock Springs Road was closed in the area, but the road was reopened around 9:15 a.m.
