BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A 60-year-old Rockledge woman died after a crash Friday morning on U.S. 1 that forced lane closures near Melbourne, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 6:45 a.m. on U.S. 1 at Otter Creek Lane, north of where U.S. 1 meets the Pineda Causeway.

According to an FHP crash report, the wreck involved an SUV and a dump truck. Both vehicles were traveling southbound — the SUV directly behind the dump truck in the outside lane, approaching Otter Creek Lane — when the dump truck slowed for traffic ahead. The SUV failed to slow and it struck the rear of the dump truck as a result, troopers said.
The Rockledge woman was driving the SUV, troopers said. She was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital, the report states.

The 69-year-old Winter Garden man who drove the dump truck remained at the scene for a time but was eventually taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, troopers said.
All southbound lanes of U.S. 1 and its inside northbound lane were blocked for several hours. At the time of this report, FHP lists only a “roadblock” remains, with no further specification of which lane or lanes are blocked.
The FHP is still investigating.
