NHC Designates Potential Tropical Cyclone One

Tropics Watch update for 6/17

No description found

This is the weird one. What’s going on, guys?! Meteorologist Jonathan Kegges back with you for another edition of Tropics Watch! I mean weird in the sense of confusing. This is still a relatively recent designation the hurricane center uses to give people a heads up when the storm isn’t meteorologically tropical, but has the potential to become a tropical storm prior to landfall. They do this so they can issue tropical watches for a non-tropical system.

Remember, there is a set of requirements for a storm to become tropical.

Also note that a cyclone is a storm anywhere in the world. In the Atlantic basin we know tropical cyclones as tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes.

Anyway, we officially have the first ‘cone’ of the 2024 hurricane season.

PTC1

There’s another disturbance in the Atlantic as well. It has a decent opportunity to impact land (From Florida to the Carolinas) due to a ridge of high pressure anchored over the Northeast.

This storm is being born of non-tropical origins, from a dying cold front, and will likely be a sloppy and lopsided system. This will also likely cap its strength, but still inclement weather will be possible late in the week across the eastern seaboard.

That’s it for now!

More about the Tropics Watch Newsletter....

There is a lot of noise out there when it comes to the weather. A lot of hype, a lot of clickbait etc. You have my word that you will never see any of those scare tactics from me and News 6. Seeing this myself makes my blood boil.

We’re going to talk about a lot of stuff (hopefully while everything remains out at sea), but we will do so with sound science and meteorology.

It is my hope to have a conversation about the weather this season and to my pass along everything I know so that you know what to look out for.

You can expect an e-mail from me every Monday (and as needed) during hurricane season. If it’s quiet, we’re going to talk about it. If there’s something going on out there, we’re definitely going to be talking about it. We also have a live tropics show that airs on our YouTube channel every Monday at 11 a.m.
