First signs that the tropics are waking starting to show

Tropics Watch update for 7/22

Tropics (Jonathan Kegges)

I don’t know about you, but I am digging this break in the tropics! What’s going on, guys?! Meteorologist Jonathan Kegges back with you for another edition of Tropics Watch. In the short term the Atlantic will remain quiet, but over by the first couple of days in August, there may be something to track.

The National Hurricane Center has highlighted two disturbances in the Pacific for possible tropical development over the next seven. Ok, so who cares about storms in the Pacific? Good question!

In this case, the development in the Pacific is the direct result of the Madden-Julian Oscillation. The MJO for short goes around the globe every 30-60 days. It can dictate the weather across the world while it moves around. The MJO over the next week or 10 days will help enhance rising motion in the Pacific. As the calendar page turns to August, the favorable environment will shift to the Atlantic. So the Pacific development is likely a sign of things to come in our basin next month.

Steering currents over the next couple weeks look to favor storms making their way west due to a strong Bermuda high so anything that does develop over the next two to three weeks will have to be watched closely.

The Euro ensembles are starting to hint at something early in August.

NOAA’s experimental two week tropical hazards forecast also has the general area highlighted.

The pattern as we talked about above would already suggest development.

Tropics Watch LIVE (See below on how to watch) is now permanently at 8 p.m. eastern time!

Enjoy the quiet stretch while we have it! Hope you have a great night and thanks for reading!

There is a lot of noise out there when it comes to the weather. A lot of hype, a lot of clickbait etc. You have my word that you will never see any of those scare tactics from me and News 6. Seeing this myself makes my blood boil.

We’re going to talk about a lot of stuff (hopefully while everything remains out at sea), but we will do so with sound science and meteorology.

It is my hope to have a conversation about the weather this season and to my pass along everything I know so that you know what to look out for.

You can expect an e-mail from me every Monday (and as needed) during hurricane season. If it’s quiet, we’re going to talk about it. If there’s something going on out there, we’re definitely going to be talking about it. We also have a live tropics show that airs on our YouTube channel every Monday at 11 a.m.

If you’re in Central Florida tune into our Hurricane Special airing June 3rd at 8 p.m. on WKMG News 6. We will break down what we are seeing and talk about ways to keep your family safe.
